Body-Worn Camera Policy

Body-Worn Camera

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office now actively deploys body-worn cameras (BWCs) on all uniformed deputies.

BCWs are activated while in performance of official law enforcement duties and for the purpose of recording incidents, investigations, and deputy-citizen encounters. Deputies will active their cameras whenever they are responding to a call for service or at the initiation of any other investigative encounger between a deputy and a member of the public, unless there is a threat to the deputy's life or safety that makes such activation impossible or dangerous.

As per sheriff's office policy, BCWs are worn in a conspicuous manner on deputies' uniforms and are placed in accordance with the camera manufacturer's instructions.

Deputies will reasonably place BWCs to maximize the devices' ability to capture video footage of the deputies' activities. To the extent reasonably possible, a BWC shall be placed so that the camera is unobstructed (e.g. outside clothing).

The GCSO's policy also includes detailed information about requirements, training, standards, release of recordings, retention of BWC recordings, and much more.
