Detective Division

Crime Scene PhotoThe Detective Division consists of a captain, sergeant and five detectives who are responsible for investigating major crimes that occur throughout Gallatin County. These include investigation of crimes such as employee embezzlement, identity theft, burglary, assault, sex crimes, arson, theft, and homicide. Unlike the movies and television, these crimes are not solved in an hour but often involve lengthy, in depth, and meticulous investigations that take a great deal of time to complete.

The detectives are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to assist patrol deputies and other agencies with investigations. The division works closely with federal, state and local agencies to resolve cases as quickly as possible.  One detective specializes in investigations of sexual and violent crimes against women and children, including child pornography cases.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office is responsible for registering sex offenders and violent offenders in the unincorporated parts of Gallatin County.  Registrations, community notifications, and registration violation investigations are conducted through the Detective Division. For municipalities, registration is conducted through the local police department.

Internally, the division provides background investigations on potential employees, performs internal investigations, and tracks citizen complaints.

The Detective Division is committed to providing an advanced level of expertise to the investigation, resolution and prosecution of crimes against persons and property.
