Big Sky residents and commuters can expect construction to resume on the MT Highway 64 (MT 64) corridor this spring. Several improvements are scheduled for completion this summer through the MT 64 TIGER Grant project, a collaborative project between Gallatin County, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), Sanderson Stewart, and Riverside Contracting.

“Although some project activities have already been completed, several improvements remain,” Danielle Scharf, project manager at Sanderson Stewart, said. “The community has been anticipating the completion of this project and we are pleased to be getting construction started again.”

Two virtual open houses will be held at Noon and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, via Zoom. Attendees will be able to learn about the planned improvements and potential travel impacts. The same information will be provided at both sessions and a question-and-answer session will follow each presentation. Registration is required for open house attendance. Those interested in attending should visit bit.ly/mt64project for more information and to register.

“This is a busy corridor and we know there will be some inconveniences during construction,” Geno Liva, MDT Butte District Administrator, said. “The virtual open house is a great opportunity for the community to hear about what to expect as construction gets underway.”

Upcoming improvements will include a new traffic signal and pedestrian tunnel near the MT 64 and Little Coyote Road intersection. Roadway and intersection improvements will begin at the intersection of US Highway 191 (US 191) and MT 64 continuing west to Big Sky Resort Road and will include upgraded wildlife signage and curve warning signage, shoulder modifications, as well as the addition of left-turn lanes at Huntley Drive, Big Pine Drive, Andesite Road, and Big Sky Resort Road. Shared-use pathways will also be constructed along MT 64 from Big Pine Drive to Andesite Road and along Little Coyote Road from MT 64 to the Big Sky Community Park, including a pedestrian bridge near the park. Chip sealing and final pavement markings will be completed in 2024.

Each project phase is intended to enhance the safety and convenience of the roadway for pedestrians and travelers along the MT 64 corridor. Regular updates will be provided throughout construction.
