The Gallatin County Road Department is funded in part by a mill levy assessed on property owners within Gallatin County but outside established city limits, as well as by gas tax revenue received from the State of Montana. The Bridge Department receives budget authority through the general fund. The two departments work together in the same location.

With the limited budgets, the Gallatin County Road & Bridge Departments employ 34 people including equipment operators, mechanics, and administrative staff. This department is responsible for the maintenance of over 200 roads totaling over 1,000 centerline miles, over 200 bridges, and approximately 5,000 culverts.

Work is performed on County maintained roads and bridges, and does not include the following road systems:
  • Subdivision roads (public roads maintained by the residents, usually through a homeowner association or an RID)
  • Private roads and bridges (privately owned and maintained by residents)
  • City roads (maintained by the city)
  • State highways (maintained by the Montana Department of Transportation).
