RESIDENCY - MONTANA LICENSE REQUIREMENT? Do I need a Montana ID to register my vehicle in Montana?

You do not need to have a Montana driver's license to title and register your vehicle in Montana, but you do need to prove residency in the County you are attempting to register your vehicle in.

If you don't have a Montana driver's license you will have to present one of the following forms of ID AND either a lease agreement or a property tax statement showing your physical address in Gallatin County.

  • Government issued photo ID
  • Out of state drivers license
  • Passport

If you are an MSU student, you can show a form of ID from list above and your MSU ID card.

If you do not have a lease agreement or property tax statement, you can bring one of the forms of ID listed above AND a combination of 2 of the following documents showing your physical address:

  • Bank statement
  • Certified court document
  • Insurance policy/card
  • Montana hunting/fishing license
  • Pay stub
  • Phone bill
  • School transcript or report card
  • Voter registration card

If you do not have a permanent address, please obtain a written statement on the letterhead from a Montana Social Services Agency verifying residency status and a descriptive address.  You are still required to show a photo ID.

If you are registering under an LLC, if the registered agent for that LLC is listed with an address from another County, you will have to register there, unless your business has a physical store front in Gallatin County that customers can actually go to. A house does not work for this purpose.
