NEW TO MONTANA: I just moved to Montana and need to transfer my title(s).

If you just recently moved to Montana and need to transfer your vehicle title from another state, you must bring the following documentation with you:

1. The original title.  If you cannot locate your original title, you will have to contact the originating state and complete their requirements to obtain one.  If your financial institution holds the original title, you'll need to complete an MV63 Request for Foreign Title Transfer form and have the financial institution send us the title.  The financial institution must send the $4.12 fee - not you.

To complete this document, list your bank as the Secured Party at the top of the form. Write your name as the applicant, and use OUR address in the area labeled **Return this form, with the title....:
Gallatin County Motor Vehicle - Bozeman Office
311 West Main, Room 102
Bozeman, MT  59715
Sign the document under Registered Owner, and send it to your bank via email, fax or mail.  We cannot send those requests on your behalf.  It can take a few weeks for your financial institution to get the title to us.  Please continue to contact them until they have confirmed that it was sent.  We may or may not contact you to let you know it has been received.  We recommend that you email us at mv@gallatin.mt.gov, providing us with your name, the name of your financial institution, the make and model of the vehicle and the last six digits of your VIN.

2. A government issued ID.  If you do not have a Montana ID, please bring another government issued ID and proof of residency.  Please see proof of residency also listed under FAQs.  If there is more than one person listed on the title, please bring a photo of their IDs with you.

3. Form of payment.

If you have all of the documentation necessary to complete your transaction, you will receive a registration and plates at that time.  We will keep your title, and the State of Montana will send you a new Montana title within three to four weeks.
