REFUNDS: Can I get a refund for some or all of my registration fees?

Refund policy:
The State of Montana does not offer prorated refunds for people who have paid for a year and then moved to another state.

The State of Montana only allows for a refund when the following occurs before the titling and registration, or renewal was completed:

1. The vehicle was sold
2. The vehicle was traded
3. The vehicle was totaled in an accident *insurance may reimburse the vehicle owner in this instance

If any of the instances listed above apply, you can submit a Request for Refund form to your local Motor Vehicle Office.  To be considered, the vehicle owner must include:

1. The original financial statement/receipt from our MERLIN system
2. Any registration tabs you received, if requesting refund of fees paid online using the Vehicle Registration Renewal Service
3. Any other documentation that will support your refund request (i.e. sale document, police report, insurance report)

You can bring your application and supporting documents to one of our offices, or email it to mv@gallatin.mt.gov.  Please allow a minimum of 30 days for a response.
