Truck Driver/ Laborer/ Equipment Operator- Road & Bridge

Under general supervision of the Road Foreman, this position is responsible for operating specialized heavy equipment and tools to maintain, repair, and construct County roads and roadway features. The position also provides operational support to the Road, Bridge, and Junk Vehicle Department and performs a variety of other duties as assigned. The position reports to the Road Foreman and does not supervise other personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires knowledge and skills in specialized heavy equipment and tool operations, road/bridge maintenance and construction standards and procedures, material specifications, and basic mechanical diagnosis and repair. The position also requires the ability to monitor and maintain safety protocols, work effectively under adverse site conditions, and coordinate tasks and procedures with others.

Education and Experience

The required knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma plus three (3) years of related experience in heavy equipment operations, road/bridge construction, or related trade/technical field. Applicants for this position must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Montana or attain a Montana driver’s license within six months of hire and be insurable under the County’s liability policies.

Equipment operators are required to complete the following training/accreditations within six months of hire: Flagger Certification, First Aid/CPR, MSHA-46 (Miner) Certification, Wildland Fire Training and Work Zone Safety Training.  

The Position also requires a Class A CDL, Type 1 driver’s license with air brake endorsement (or the ability to attain one within 90 days of hire).

As a condition of hire, the final candidate will be required to successfully pass a criminal history check and background investigation and will be required to successfully pass pre-employment drug testing and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing thereafter.

This is a union position under the International Union of operating Engineers Local #400.

Winter Work HoursFull-Time, 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday - Friday
Summer Work HoursFull-Time, 6:00am to 4:30pm Monday - Thursday

Position is required to be on-call during storm cycles.
