Mechanic (Revised)

Under general supervision of the Shop Foreman, this position is responsible for maintaining and repairing specialized equipment and vehicles; designing and fabricating custom components; and providing roadside and emergency assistance. The position also provides operational support to the Road, Bridge, and Junk Vehicle Department and performs a variety of other duties as assigned. The position reports to the Shop Foreman and does not supervise other County employees.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires knowledge and skills in specialized electronic and mechanical diagnosis and repair, heavy equipment and tool operations, machine tool and fabrication, industrial materials, and equipment and vehicle specifications. The position also requires the ability to monitor and maintain safety protocols, work effectively under adverse site conditions, and coordinate tasks and procedures with others.

Education and Experience

The required knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to two years of post-secondary education or formal training plus three (3) years of related experience in gasoline/diesel mechanics, machine tool, electronics, heavy equipment operations, or related trade/technical field.  Applicants for this position must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Montana or attain a Montana driver’s license within six months of hire and be insurable under the County’s liability policies.

Mechanics are required to complete the following training/accreditations within six months of hire: First Aid/CPR, Wildland Fire Training, Work Zone Safety Training and MSHA-46 (Miner) Certification. The position also requires a Class A CDL, Type 1 driver’s license with air brakes and Tanker endorsement (or the ability to attain one within 90 days of hire).

As a condition of hire, the final candidate will be required to successfully pass a criminal history check and background investigation and will be required to successfully pass pre-employment drug testing and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing thereafter.

SUMMER WORK HOURS:    Full-time, 6:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.  Tues. – Fri

WINTER WORK HOURS:      Full-time, 7:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.    Mon – Fri
