DEQ Issues Draft Environmental Assessment for Proposed Logan Landfill Expansion

Logan Landfill

On Jan. 5, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) published a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for a proposed expansion at Logan Landfill, a Class II landfill operated by the Gallatin County Solid Waste District (District) in Gallatin County, Mont. The District accepts approximately 160,000 tons of waste per year and services Gallatin County, including the West Yellowstone/Hebgen Lake Refuse District, the cities of Belgrade, Three Forks, Bozeman and the town of Manhattan. The Logan Landfill also receives waste from Jefferson County, Broadwater County, Madison County, Park County and Yellowstone National Park. At current rates, the 127-acre landfill would reach capacity in 2025.

The proposed 543.8-acre expansion includes 300 acres to be utilized for municipal solid waste, nine acres for an asbestos disposal unit, and 8.8 acres for a scale house and office. The remaining area of the expansion would be used as a buffer. The proposed expansion would increase waste disposal capacity by 45,353,200 total cubic yards.

DEQ prepared a draft EA in compliance with the Montana Environmental Policy Act to analyze potential impacts of the proposal. There is a 30-day public comment period following the publication of the draft EA, after which DEQ will review comments and make a final decision on the application. Public comment closes Feb. 3, 2022, and comments can be submitted electronically or by mail. To view the draft EA or to submit comment, please visit the DEQ website at: https://deq.mt.gov/News/publiccomment-folder/news-article48.
