Gallatin County, Montana
Do I need a permit to install a septic system?
Gallatin Local Water Quality District
There are three main approvals that must be obtained before you may operate a private wastewater treatment system in Gallatin County:

Application Approval:
Issuance of a wastewater treatment system "Permit to Construct" is authorization to install a system as per the approved plans and any permit conditions.
Installation Approval:
Upon inspection and certification by the responsible party and given compilation of all measurements and field notes, permission given to backfill (cover) the system.
Final Approval:
Approval granted upon review and acceptance of the system certification and as-built drawings.  The Permit to Construct then becomes a Permit to Operate when the system is approved.

Before you construct or repair a wastewater treatment system, replace or alter an existing system within Gallatin County, you must hold a valid "Permit to Construct" issued by Gallatin County City-County Health Department Environmental Health Services for that specific construction, repair, replacement or alteration.
