Bozeman Solvent Site Controlled Ground Water Area
Gallatin Local Water Quality District
Effective Date: July 20, 1998

Location (Legal Description):
W2NW, SENW, SW, SWSE Section 25; E2 Section 26; E2 Section 35; Section 36  All in Township 1S Range 5E, Gallatin County.
W2, W2E2 Section 1; E2E2 Section 2; E2NE Section 11; NW, N2SW Section 12  All in Township 2S Range 5E, Gallatin County.

Summary:
The general location of this controlled ground water area is from West Main Street between North 20th and North 11th Streets in the City of Bozeman, extending north of the East Gallatin River to the Riverside Golf Course.

Drilling and installing water wells within this controlled ground water area is prohibited without receiving an interim permit from DNRC first.

Permits will not be issued by DNRC for the following conditions:

The proposed well is located within the zone of highest contamination (100 parts per billion or greater of chlorinated solvents in the ground water).

Ground water pumping from the individual well or in combination with nearby wells is likely to induce or redirect contaminated ground water plume migration.

Water supply from the City of Bozeman municipal water supply system is or will soon be available.

The proposed well has a design capacity of 100 gallons per minute or greater.

DNRC may approve a permit subject to certain conditions such as water treatment requirements.

Monitoring wells used just for monitoring water quality or quantity are excluded from the controlled ground water area permit requirements.

If there is ever evidence that part of the controlled ground water area is not contaminated and will most likely never be contaminated, procedures may be initiated to remove that part from the controlled ground water area.

About the Bozeman Solvent Site...

The Bozeman Solvent Site is located in the northwest area of Bozeman and is the result of an inadvertent discharge of dry cleaning fluid into the subsurface at the Buttrey Shopping Center.  Solvent-affected ground water was discovered in 1989, and the site has been monitored on a regular basis since.  Ground water monitoring has involved domestic wells (residential and business) as well as a network of monitoring wells.   Monitoring activities are conducted by Maxim Technologies, Inc. on a semi-annual basis.

Monitoring activities include:  Depth to ground water measurements, ground water field parameter measurements for dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, temperature, pH, and specific conductance; and ground water sampling for volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
