Environmental Health Specialist (Revised)
Gallatin City-County Health Department seeks a detail-minded individual with demonstrated skills serving the public to join a team committed to overseeing fair, consistent, and customer-focused oversight of wastewater treatment systems and Sanitation in Subdivision Act reviews in Gallatin County.  The position is located in Gallatin City-County Health Department Environmental Health Services Office and performs duties that support the vision, mission and goals of the Department. This position is responsible for applying local and state regulations of wastewater treatment systems serving individual homes, businesses, and housing developments. Under the Sanitation in Subdivisions Act this position will review sanitation facilities, including the water supply, sewage disposal, solid waste disposal, and storm drainage systems. This position is also responsible for providing technical guidance and ensuri ng compliance of county residents and businesses with public health laws.  The mission of this work is to provide excellent customer service while protecting public health and the environment.  The position reports to the EHS Director through an Environmental Health Specialist Program Lead, and does not supervise staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  This work requires knowledge of the principles and practices of physical and life sciences; working knowledge of federal, state, and county sanitary and public health regulations and enforcement procedures; research and investigation techniques; skill in the operation of databases and standard office software; and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in occasional adversarial situations.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  The required knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience.  The incumbent must become a licensed Registered Sanitarian within 12 months of hire.  To become a licensed Registered Sanitarian in Montana, you must have a Bachelors degree in Environmental Health or an equivalent degree including specific course requirements including one (1) course in microbiology.  You must pass a national exam with a 68% or better score.  For more information about these requirements, please contact the Montana Board of Sanitarians, http://boardsbsd.dli.mt.gov/san.


Licenses and Certifications:  Applicants for this position must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the County’s liability policies.  

As a condition of hire, the final candidate will be required to successfully pass a criminal history check and background investigation.

SALARY:
Sanitarian-In-Training $3,237.99 per month based on an hourly rate of $18.68/hr.
Pay rate for a licensed Registered Sanitarian in this posiiton starts at $3,829.08 per month based on an hourly rate of $22.09 + Benefits.  Higher rates of pay will be considered for applicants with a MT Registered Sanitarian license and previous experience in the field.
