This is a uniformed position and is located within the Sheriff’s Office Detention Division. The position will initially lead the transition team for the new detention center. The Assistant Administrator provides supervision of shift sergeants, and is responsible for making decisions and resolving problems to ensure compliance of staff with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office Policy and Procedure Manual. Duties include providing assistance to sergeants, evaluating shift sergeants, assigning special duties, preparing schedules, recommending policy
changes, working with other agencies, resolving personnel conflicts, resolving issues involving the public and others, reviewing performance evaluations completed by shift sergeants, assisting in the preparation of the annual budget, and performing a variety of other duties as assigned. The position reports to the Detention Center Administrator, and indirectly supervises detention officers and clerical staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This work requires knowledge of an extensive body of detention and corrections procedures, and operations requiring specialized training and experience in the field; knowledge of inmate grievance procedures, conducting investigations, and interviewing; knowledge of supervisory principles and practices and related legal requirements, knowledge of the judicial system, and knowledge of specialized aspects of Detention Center operations. The position also requires knowledge of budgeting, program management and administration and knowledge of office and business software. The position requires exceptional communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing as well as negotiation and persuasive communication techniques.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The minimum qualifications required are knowledge, skills, and abilities typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of a two-year law enforcement training program, plus five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience in corrections. Preferred qualifications are a bachelor-masters degree in an applicable related field, and possess a P.O.S.T. Corrections Detention Officer Basic certificate. If the person selected for this position does not possess this certificate, they must attend the basic course within the one-year probationary period.
