Tax Appeal Board
To contact the Tax Appeal Board:

311 W. Main St., Rm #306
Bozeman, MT 59715
(406) 582-3000

This board consists of three members, each with a staggered three-year term.  This board hears taxpayers' appeals from the Department of Revenue's (DOR) property tax assessments, as well as attends meetings called by the State Tax Appeal Board.

Reassessment notices were mailed out around September 8, 2009 - you should have received your assessment notice roughly 2-3 business days after DOR mailed them.  Every taxpayer has 30-days to either file an AB-26 form with the Department or file an appeal with the local tax appeal board.  If you have not yet filed either of these and intend to, you will need to write an explanation as to why your appeal or AB-26 form is untimely and include it with your form(s).

For the 2009 calendar year (appeals heard for the 2008 tax year), the Gallatin County Tax Appeal Board has requested an extension from the State Tax Appeal Board (STAB) to hold hearings until March 31, 2010.  STAB has granted Gallatin County this extension.  However, with the overwhelming number of appeals submitted this year, the board has already filled its hearing agendas through March 31st.  The remaining appeals received will be heard during the regular hearing times of July 1 through December 31, beginning again in 2010.

Many appeals have been received and accepted but not yet scheduled due to the amount of appeals we have.  If you recently submitted an appeal, you will be notified by the Board.  Their letter will explain this process and inform the appellant that they will be notified in early June 2010 of a possible July or August hearing date.

If you did not file an AB-26 form with the Department of Revenue at the time you submitted your appeal, the Board does encourage you to do so.  The Department resolves roughly 75% of all disputes by explaining the process and how the mass appraisal system works.  They can also correct any errors on your property ID card without going to appeal.

Should you resolve your dispute with the Department of Revenue, and had an appeal on file with the County Tax Appeal Board, please print and complete the AB-63 form and return it to the Tax Appeal Board at the address above to officially withdraw your appeal.
